My, how time flies

Wow. I can hardly believe that it's been almost 7 years since I met Ryan. And the weird thing about all that is that we got married a year (almost to the day) after we met at that birthday party. So many things have happened and changed over these last years. I have gained a whole other family whom I love dearly.

You know how sometimes people marry and their in-laws are crazy? Or that their family doesn't get along with their in-laws? Well, I guess I must be the exception to that rule. My parents and Ryan's parents get along great. Even my grandparents get along well with them. It's like when we got married, my family took Ryan in as one of their own and Ryan's family did the same with me. We both know how incredibly lucky we are. And I truly wish that for everyone. I've heard horror stories about in-laws. Thankfully I haven't had to experience that...and am wishing I never have to.

So, what's different six/seven years later? Well, first of all, we have TWO kids. And they're the best kids ever. Now, maybe I'm a little biased, but ask anybody. Surprisingly they're incredibly well behaved (with just a few minor missteps like every child) and really loving kids.

Alex is my little "people pleaser." He wants everyone to like him. He's such a sweet boy, too. And really tenderhearted sometimes. But we've grown to love that about him. He's emotional just like his Momma. He's sincere and genuine with his feelings. I couldn't ask for a better son, really. I hope he stays this sweet his whole life. I'm thinking he will. :)

Reesey is vastly different from her brother. She couldn't care less if she pleased anyone or not. Now, she's not a mean girl by any means. She just knows what she wants and if people don't like it, oh well. She, like her brother, is really loving. However, she reserves that for specific people, which makes your relationship with her all the more special. She's so funny. She cracks me up on a daily basis! She even makes Alex laugh, which I find quite amusing and sweet. They are each other's best friends, and that makes me so happy. They like to play together and they get upset when the other is hurt or frightened. Alex is very protective of her. It's too sweet!

When you marry somebody, I don't care if you dated for years or just months previous, you learn more about them than you knew before. And while I knew that I was supposed to marry Ryan on that night when I first met him, I had no idea who he was as a person. And getting to know him over the year that year, I grew to love who he was inside. He truly is my best friend. We've been through a lot in our short marriage, but it's all been so worth it. It's made us better parents and better to each other. He's the greatest person I know and I'm so lucky and grateful that God put him in my life.

A lot of people wouldn't have lasted with all the obstacles we faced. There's a Faith Hill song, "A Baby Changes Everything," that speaks of what Mary went through when she was pregnant with Jesus. Now, I know that I'm nowhere near on that level. Don't think I'm trying to sound like I am. But I do know that a baby changes everything. Sometimes a baby changes things for the worse for some people. The stresses of a baby and a new marriage can break a couple. Or they can make them stronger than they ever thought. We were fortunate to be in the latter category. The circumstances leading up to my marriage and birth of my son were not ideal. But I honestly wouldn't change anything. Because changing one thing means that I'm not happy and content with what God has blessed me. He knew we could handle it. He knew how we'd turn out, even if we didn't.

I love Ryan more than anyone could ever know. He is everything in my world. And I cherish the relationship we have. We fight, we laugh, we cry, we yell, we tease, we love. All of it makes for one great marriage. We are not perfect and I'm so thankful for that. Because it makes us aware of what is around us and what could have and probably should have brought us down when we were at a really low point in our lives. Satan tried to break us. He threw up obstacles and people said and did things that were wrong and horrible. But we overcame them and we're stronger for it. And happier.

Trick or Treat! Smell My Feet!

Halloween was a blast in the McAlister household. We went to a really nice neighborhood behind the football stadium here in Owasso. We went there last year and went to just a few houses after we'd gone to one of the local churches. But this year, we decided to just go to houses and trick-or-treat door to door. It was so great!!


Alex was dressed as a Clone Trooper from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Reesey went dressed as Snow White, of course! They were soo cute!!


When we were at one house, this older gentleman said, "Wow! That's the biggest smile I've seen all night." He was talking about Reesey, and he was right! She was just all smiles all night. When we were at another house, there was what looked like a dummy leaning up against the front entrance and another guy was handing out the candy. Alex asked the guy if that was real and he said no. Then the guy moved and yelled BOO! Alex about jumped out of his skin! So did Ryan and I. And what did Reesey do? NOTHING! Didn't even phase her. The guy asked if that scared her. She said, "No. I'm not scared of anything." And apparently she isn't. :-)


So that's how we spent Halloween. It was super fun!! Maybe next year Ryan and I will dress up too. We'll see.

100 Bits of "Kristin" Trivia

Here are things that you may not know about me, but I felt moved to share. A friend of mine at school did this on her Facebook account, so I'm stealing her idea. I hope she won't mind.

1. I unashamedly love girl musical groups from the 60s.
2. Apparently, I'm quite clumsy.
3. One of my eyes appears smaller than the other when I smile.
4. When I was a little girl, I had a lisp. And sometimes when I'm really tired, it slips out.
5. When I laugh, my nostrils flare uncontrollably.
6. I like to watch Lifetime movies when I'm home alone, or when I'm sick.
7. At one point in my life, around 6th grade, I wore inserts in my shoes to correct my ankle "issue". It didn't work and I don't wear them anymore.
8. I had braces for 3 and a half years of my life.
9. I'm obsessed with flavored waters. And not the Aquafina or Dasani kind. The generic ones from Wal-mart.
10. I cry....alot. It's a thing I do.
11. I'm very passionate about singing. I love to do it and it's one of the things that I know I do well.
12. I have self-esteem issues.
13. When I was 2 years old, I got lost at the Oklahoma State Fair in OKC. I have vivid memories still to this day of that night. They're like snapshots.
14. I remember all of my dreams.
15. When people spell "yeah" like "ya", it really bothers me.
16. I've never gotten a speeding ticket. The only tickets I've ever gotten were parking tickets on campus at OU.
17. I love the way my kids smell in the morning or right after they wake up from naps.
18. I still like to color.
19. I watch sappy chick flicks over and over again, for the fun of it.
20. I will watch OSU basketball with my husband and enjoy it....to an extent.
21. Cake makes me gag.
22. I can eat an entire batch of homemade brownies in one sitting.
23. I buy books based on their covers. If it looks cool, I'll buy it. If it's an ugly cover, I won't.
24. I could still do the hurdles if given the chance.
25. Sometimes I find myself randomly standing in the "Ready, OK" position. (That's cheerleading lingo)
26. I count my steps sometimes when I walk.
27. I have phases where I want things to be really organized. Those only last a few months, though.
28. I don't remember the exact date that Ryan proposed to me. (That's horrible)
29. I love to take pictures of other people, but I don't like to be in pictures often.
30. I can remember numbers well.
31. I know random actors' names. Not well known actors, either. "Hector Elizondo" always freaks Ryan out.
32. "The Wizard of Oz" is my all-time favorite movie.
33. If I wasn't as tall as I am, I would still jump on my bed like I did when I was a kid.
34. I graduated high school with 66 people.
35. I love to buy shoes, but have cut way back.
36. I can not justify spending more than $30 on myself for clothes at a time.
37. I check my e-mail about 6 to 7 times a day.
38. I don't like to use public restrooms and only will in emergency situations.
39. I have a bit of a temper.
40. I am filled with joy when my kids hug or kiss each other.
41. I have never filled out a baby book for either of my children.
42. While I don't regret the tattoo that I have, I regret the circumstances surrounding my getting it.
43. I actually enjoy grocery shopping.
44. I know every word to every song in "The Sound of Music."
45. I hate confrontation, but won't back down when bullied.
46. I save movie stubs from great movies.
47. I still have one shirt from when I was in high school. It's a sweatshirt.
48. I had post-partum depression after both babies. It was worse after Reese.
49. Ryan and I drew Alex's name out of a hat.
50. I clip coupons and then forget to use them.
51. When I see my old teachers from childhood, I still call them Mr. or Mrs. I can't call them by their first names, even if they ask me to.
52. I miss my old dog Peaches, even though she liked me least.
53. I always knew I would be a fairly young mom.
54. I sing, loudly, when I'm in the car.
55. I can't stand to have the heater on. It makes it difficult for me to breathe.
56. Winter is my favorite season.
57. I don't know how to dive.
58. I pretend to be a heavy sleeper.
59. When I speak, I enunciate so well that you can read my lips from across the room and understand everything I'm saying.
60. My nickname when I was little was "Beaner."
61. I never forget a face.
62. I'm not a very brave person.
63. I rarely forget important dates. (Except the day Ryan proposed, apparently.)
64. I know everyone's birthday. If you've told me, that is.
65. If I could, I would paint every room in my house a different shade of purple.
66. When I was in high school, I locked my keys in my car on a weekly basis. The principal kept a spare set in his desk after awhile.
67. I've broken my nose 3 times.
68. My big toes look like light bulbs.
69. I have small hands, like my dad.
70. I still remember my best friend's name (Mary Catherine) from when we lived in Midwest City. We moved when I was 4.
71. "You Are So Beautiful" by Joe Cocker brings me to tears every time I hear it, especially at the end when his voice cracks.
72. I don't find Angelina Jolie attractive at all.
73. I could eat Lemon Meringue pie every day.
74. The Sonic commercials with the two guys, and the ones with the husband and wife, are my favorite commercials.
75. I have horrendous eye sight.
76. I will only buy Duracell batteries. I don't like Energizer.
77. I have an overwhelming fear of being attacked when I'm out at night by myself.
78. I can cook, but only if by recipe. I'm not creative in the kitchen.
79. I can't draw.
80. Music moves me in a way like nothing else.
81. I think Sean Connery has a very sexy voice and is one of the most handsome men on the planet...still.
82. Some of my best memories from childhood involve my best friend Melanie Merchant. We were inseparable from kindergarten on, until we lost touch after she moved in 7th grade.
83. I didn't know what "Smoothe move, Exlax!" meant until I was in college.
84. There's a look that Ryan gives me that gets me every time.
85. I've never been to New York City, but want to go in the next 5 years.
86. I turn the water off when I brush my teeth.
87. I have Three Dog Night on my iPod.
88. Princess Diana died on my sixteenth birthday.
89. I could listen to a British person read the phone book and be completely at peace.
90. Iced animal cookies are my favorite.
91. I love to write poetry.
92. "The Office" is my favorite TV show.
93. My favorite Christmas movie is "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."
94. Debbie Gibson's birthday is the same day as mine.
95. Cheerleading was my one great love growing up.
96. God told me that I was going to marry Ryan the night I met him. I didn't even know who he was yet.
97. I watched Seinfeld before anybody knew what it was...way before it became popular.
98. My first Cabbage Patch doll's name is Kerry. My parents still have her in my closet at their home.
99. I don't like to watch football.
100. The happiest day in my life was the day that Ryan and I got married.

My dear, sweet Paige

I have been extremely blessed by the people God has chosen to place in my life. My family is incredible. My in-laws (all of them) are amazing as well. They treat me like an actual member of the family, not an in-law. They welcomed me with open arms at our first meeting and it's been remarkable ever since.

My sister-in-law Paige is Ryan's oldest sister. While I love all of Ryan's siblings equally, Paige and I have more in common than any of the others. We are both mothers. That is enough to bond us for life. And we both have this love for Ryan that is undeniable and unbreakable. I love that she loves him as much as she does. I love that she loves my kids the way she does. She treats them as if they were her own when they are around her.

But what I find the most moving is the relationship that I've developed with her over the past 6 years. Paige was a bit intimidating at first. She has such a bond with Ryan that I didn't know where I would stand with her. She was welcoming from the night I met her, though. I felt an instant chemistry with her that I almost can't describe. It was like she just got me. She understands my sense of humor. She understands my frustrations with things. She keeps my confidences when I entrust her with them.

She laughs with me when life is silly and funny. She cries with me when it gets really hard and painful. She is a sounding board for me when I feel like I'm losing my mind sometimes. She's more than just my sister-in-law. She really is my friend. But I really think it's even more than that. She's my sister. I love her dearly for treating me with such respect that I never thought I deserved.

She may or may not realize that she does this, but there is something that she says that moves me almost to tears (and actually results in tears sometimes) when I hear it. It's small. It may not mean much to most people, but it means everything to me. I don't have a biological sister. It's just me and my brother. And Paige has been calling me "Sis" for awhile now. Every time she says it, I get this catch in my throat. It means the world to me. I have always wanted to have a sister. I think anyone who doesn't have one feels that way. And to feel like she thinks of me as her sister....wow! I don't know if she knows she's even saying it. But I notice it. Every single time. And I love her even more for it.

I thank God often for bringing specific people into my life. I am so thankful that He chose to allow us to be in each other's lives forever. She is the epitome of what a true friend is. Thank you, Paige, for being my friend AND sister!

Reese-isms

I'll update this often with more of her silly phrases, but for now, here's a snipet of her language:



Here is a list of the wacky things my daughter says, or has been saying lately:


"Your oil highness"
"I'm changing back into my mind."
"Could I have some fresh panties?" (not "clean", not "new")
"Momma, who do I look?" (not how, who....and not who do I look like, either)
"I look a fairy princess."

Here's what she prays every night, verbatim:
"Lord God,I just ask for my family. And Momma wasn't a mean witch anymore, when I wasn't a mean witch anymore, when Daddy wasn't a mean witch anymore, when Alex wasn't a mean witch anymore, when Meemaw wasn't a mean witch anymore, when Papa wasn't a mean witch anymore, when Grandma wasn't a mean witch anymore, when Grandpa wasn't a mean witch anymore.In Jesus name,Amen." (sometimes Mammaw and Pappaw get thrown in there, too)

Bee-bee-energy. Bee-bee-energy. (all the while running in a circle in the living room)

"Momma, do you like me?" (my response: "Yes, Reesey, I love you.") "Say, 'berry much.'" (my response: "Very much.")

She's been saying some of these for awhile and I just remembered them:

Here are a few of the names for her baby dolls:

Baby Ho-ho (which I think is the one now called "Baby Oh-oh")

Baby Brother (neither of which has anything to do with them being brother and sister....one wears a yellow "Curious George" shirt and the other has on a blue onesie)
Baby Brown-Pink (which is a doll at Ryan's mom and dad's that happens to be a black baby wearing a pink night gown)

Her PINK bunny is a BOY. Always has been. She's had Bunny since the day she was born and loves him like he's a member of the family. We don't go anywhere without him.

"This is me when I was old. And when I was a baby when I was in your tummy and then I rolled out."--Explaining to us about when she was born, I suppose.

"Twinkle, little star. How I wonder what you are. Of a butt the world so high. In a diamond in the sky. Twinkle, twinkle little star. How I wonder what you ate for breakfast."

The other day, my mom came over so she and I could go shopping. Reesey was sitting up at the table and my mom went by and pinched her hiney. She said, "I got your cheek!" Reesey said, "No. Meemaw, that's not my cheek." Mom asked, "What was it, then?" She said, "It's my hiney. Hiney's don't have cheeks." Silly girl!!!

"Momma, can I watch Bibble and Eleina?" It's her Barbie Mermaidia movie.

"Let's see what I am." Standing on the scale in the bathroom.

"Look at that cat!" It's so much better, though, actually hearing her say it. Too funny.

"I miss Mammaw Regular." Said with a sad face. "Mammaw Regular" is Ryan's mom. Ryan's grandma passed away when Reesey was about 7 or 8 months old. Her name was Mammaw Mo. So, to get out of things or to keep from getting in trouble, sometimes Reesey tells us she misses Mammaw Mo. It doesn't work. It did a few times, but not anymore. We've figured her out. Sometimes she just randomly tells us that she misses Mammaw Regular (Ryan's mom).


"I want number 1." We've been giving her two choices on things. Number one is usually what we just want her to do. Number two involves either getting spanked or going to her room. She usually doesn't even let us finish before she chooses number one.

"It's pretty getting hot out there."

"It's pretty getting bright."

"And I said, 'It's pretty getting dark.'"

"This is your last morning." She meant, "This is your last WARNing." But that's what came out. She was serious, too. She told me that if I didn't stop teasing her she would spank me. I was laughing so hard, and she came over and started to spank me. It was hilarious!

Alex is a school kid.



Alex is adjusting to being in pre-k. It is quite an adjustment because he's always been a stay-at-home kid. Daycare kids have routines down by the time they enter preschool or kindergarten. He doesn't really have any routine except for bedtime. So, he's having a couple of difficult times, but we're dealing.


He did get in trouble one day for pushing. Now, that is not acceptable in our home, so he apologized to the teachers for being disobedient and promised to do better. And he did...until later that week. Apparently he was running around the classroom like a mad man. A little funny, sorta cute, but not okay. Any time they get in trouble and have to be told a couple of times to stop, they have to move their clips to yellow. It's a stoplight system. Everyone starts on green. If they misbehave (like I said above), they move it to yellow and have to be in Time Out for 5 minutes. If it progresses or is a more serious offense, they move their clips to red and have to be in Time Out for 10 minutes and get a note home to parents. Thankfully it hasn't gotten that far, but that made the second time that he had to move his clip to yellow. Uh-oh. Mr. People Pleaser is having a rough go of it at school. But he'll get better. (I hope.)


One very very cute thing that he just told me is that there is a very pretty girl in his class. Her name is Eliana (I think that's how she spells it. It's pronounced Ell-ee-ah-nuh.) He said she's prettier than any other girl. Oooh. Looks like Mr. Man may have a girlfriend in the making. I know his daddy will be proud. It made me smile when he told me that he thought she was very pretty. When I asked if she was his girlfriend, he kind of got shy and a little embarrassed. Very sweet.


Can't believe my little guy is growing up so fast. Pretty soon he'll be asking for the car keys. My how things change in the blink of an eye. :-)
